Alipay is the single most useful app for a trip to China: it pays for almost everything, hails taxis, opens metro gates in many cities and translates menus. Setup takes about 10 minutes โ do it at home, not in the airport queue.
Step 1 โ Download and register
- Install Alipay from the App Store or Google Play (the blue icon, publisher Alipay).
- Choose your country code and sign up with your own mobile number โ a Chinese number is not required.
- Enter the SMS code. If it doesn't arrive, check that your carrier allows international/short-code SMS.
Step 2 โ Link your foreign card
- Go to Account / Me โ Bank cards โ Add card.
- Enter your Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB or similar card. Name must match your passport.
- Your bank may send a confirmation โ approve it.
Step 3 โ Identity verification
Alipay asks foreign users to verify identity with their passport (photo of the data page and sometimes a selfie). Some payments stay limited until this is done, so finish it before travelling.
Step 4 โ Test it for real
A card that links successfully can still be declined on its first real charge. Use the test card on this page: scan with Alipay, pay ยฅ10 (less than $2), and you'll know in seconds whether you're ready.
Handy features once you're in China
- Transport: metro and bus QR codes in many cities, plus Didi taxis inside the app.
- Translate: camera translation for menus and signs.
- Mini-programs: rent power banks and bikes, order food, buy some attraction tickets.
